An afternoon in Zurich

Good morning everyone!

We've had a very busy but great week here at Made in Suisse and it feels so strange to have an empty house now that the last of our visitors have left. We had Mr T's parents staying for a week and three friends from Glasgow, who happened to be in France and Germany, came over for the weekend too to visit us. We wanted to show them as much as possible in the one and a half day they were here, so on Saturday, we went to Zurich mid-afternoon to spend a few hours walking around the old town before going out for a meal.

The weather was lovely (and it has been very wet ever since!) and we saw many people swimming in Zurich and many boats on the Lake.

Coming out of Fraumunster, we realised that hundreds of people were standing along Limmatquai...

There also was a lot of music and cheering from the crowd. Peering over the bridge into the water, we saw this:

We had stumbled across a medieval boat joust in the middle of the city! By twos, the boats would approach each other slowly while the opponents tried to remain balanced at the back of the boat...

The aim is to push your opponent off balance...

... and splash! only one winner can remain dry!

I have tried to look on the internet for the name of this event and any information on why it was taking place in Zurich. If anyone was there on Saturday or knows what it is all about, could you let me know?

Writing this post, I realised I haven't written many posts about Zurich or shown many photos of the city. I will try to put together a few posts next month. Since a few of you also asked, I'll have an African series of posts about my life in Ethiopia and my travels in East and West Africa. Things are a bit hectic now with the job interview and the grant proposal but August should prove to be a bit quieter.

Do come back to read about the rest of the adventures we had with our visitors!
